Welcome Food Bankers!
Are you staff at the food bank? Congratulations, all non-people managers are part of a union that will help protect your rights in the workplace! Our workplace union belongs to OPEIU, Local Chapter 29 (Office of Professional Employees International Union).
WHAT IS A UNION?
A union is a legally protected employee organization where a group of workers comes together to improve the workplace. Unions enable workers to negotiate for better working conditions and benefits.
WHAT ARE THE UNION BENEFITS?
Our contract provides a 3% annual pay increase, a floating holiday, 95% covered health insurance, lower family health insurance premium, a disciplinary process, “just cause” termination (instead of at-will employment), and more. OPEIU also provides additional benefits including travel and shopping discounts, free college, and mortgage assistance
HOW MUCH ARE UNION DUES?
Dues for full-time staff are $49, and $40 for part-time staff, per month, and (as of June 2021) deducted bi-monthly from paychecks. Union dues start after your first 30 days on the job.
DO I HAVE TO JOIN THE UNION?
Yes, if you are an eligible member you are required to join the Union. Union membership is a condition of employment for those who are eligible. Only confidential staff (such as those working in Human Resources) and those who manage other staff cannot join the Union.ur content goes here. HOW DO I JOIN THE UNION?
Union-eligible staff can sign up online https://opeiu29.unionimpact.com/register, download a Union membership form from PayCom, or you can ask a Shop Steward or HR for a paper form. Paper forms should be turned in to HR for processing.
WHAT IF I’M BEHIND IN PAYING MY DUES?
If you are behind on paying dues, please contact Claudia Cardenas at OPEIU to bring your membership current. She can be reached at claudia@opeiu29.org or 510-746-5962. Until you are in good standing (have paid all of your dues), you will not be able to vote on any contract issues and you will not be eligible to apply for benefits offered by OPEIU. Claudia will work with you on a plan to bring your membership current.
